Frankincense Oolong Tea by Aftelier Perfumes

Mandy Aftel is a supremely talented natural perfumer. But perfume is not the only thing Mandy crafts. Aside from her Chef’s essences (hello, Juniper Berry and Grand Fir, I have my eye on you), she also creates wonderful perfumed teas.

Frankincense is in my top 5 perfume notes of all time ever, so I was intrigued when I first saw it, and desperately wanted to experience the tea. Mandy has married Frankincense with organic Oolong tea. The result is an incredibly delicate, clear, slightly citrus, sweet and balsamic tea, that has a eucalyptus feel. My favourite part of this tea is normally the part I hate most – the last sip – because you get to savour the full complexity of the resin.

Oolong tea is best when steeped in water at around 85Ā° C (take the water to the boil, and allow it to cool for a while) for 3 minutes (4, if you prefer a slightly richer taste). Mandy’s Oolong can be steeped up to four times.

  1. Frankincense tea sounds devine šŸ™‚ I think we’ve spoke about Oolong tea before. I think I got a smoked one years ago and it was so bitter I couldn’t drink it šŸ˜¦

    • That’s a shame, as Oolong is probably my favourite tea! I have a ‘generic’ Oolong that I might do a comparison to, which is from a Chinese tea shop on Shaftesbury Avenue. It’s fabulous & smooth. I know you’ll love this tea, Liam!

      • Ooooh(long) sounds really tempting :p sorry I couldn’t help myself there for some word punning!

Well hopefully someday soon when I eventually get to London like I keep saying I might, you can show me this tea shop šŸ™‚

      • I will take you there! And I’ll have to save some of this to, so we can share a pot of tea šŸ™‚

    • Mandy proves that they work! You can get trial sizes, which give you a really good idea of it as you can reuse the leaves. The taste of incense is not something I’d considered before, but this has sparked an interest šŸ˜€

      And yay! Thank you šŸ™‚

      • Trial sizes are always good, I have been meaning to order some Aftelier samples (Cepes & Tuberose sounds amazeballs) so I shall look at the teas too!

      • Hehe- I knew you’d like the sound of Cepes & Tubereuse! The pair of us are a little predictable regarding notes we enjoy šŸ™‚

  2. Nick, I’m honored to have you review my tea, thank you very much! As with my perfumes, I started by making these teas for myself, and am so glad when other people like them too. The trial sizes are definitely a good way to start, and easy for me to ship anywhere (I never would have guessed that Iā€™d be shipping tea to England someday). Mandy Aftel.

    • Mandy, thanks so much for reading šŸ™‚ I am in awe of the tea, and will definitely have to order more!

    • Hi Ross, thanks for stopping by šŸ™‚ By add extra frankincense, do you mean as an Essential Oil?
